May 1, 2015 - ATD Director Lee Sentell's Report

Please share ATD Director Lee Sentell's report:

The new Alabama Tourism Economic Impact Report showed the state earns about $5 in taxes from each $1 invested in tourism sales and marketing. Unlike most agencies that spend money from the General Fund, the tourism department earns $14 million in lodgings taxes for its operations and sends three times that amount ($42 million) to increase the General Fund, says Montgomery economist Dr. Keivan Deravi.

He calculates that 23 milli...on tourists spent $11.8 billion in the state. Tourists paid more than $548 million in state taxes with another $219 million in local taxes. Without spending by these visitors, each household in the state would have had to pay $408 in additional taxes.

Deravi says the seven largest counties captured 75 percent of the total. The remaining 60 counties are responsible for $3 billion in direct spending. “Those smaller counties greatly benefit from direct marketing and awareness activities initiated by the tourism department,” which yields an additional $68 million in state taxes.

In the past 12 years, the amount that tourists spend has grown by 79 percent. The number of tourism industry employees has grown by nearly 80 percent to about 165,000 Alabamians, said state tourism director Lee Sentell. During that time, the agency’s Montgomery office staff has been reduced by 20 percent because of attrition to rank as one of state government’s most efficient departments.

Aggressive advertising and promotion of Alabama’s destinations have greatly improved the state’s image, said Sentell. “Our award-winning restaurants, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and major attractions change the perception of our state,” he said.

In addition to grants that market hometown festivals, the department supports major events, such as IndyCar races in Birmingham, NASCAR races in Talladega, SEC baseball in Hoover and college football bowl games. Special promotions, such as the current Year of Alabama Barbecue, focus positive attention on the state.

At the direction of the Legislature, the tourism agency has developed contingency plans for a 15 percent cut and a 30 percent cut for operations next year.

March 18, 2015 - Decatur Gateway Pedestrian Bridge

Decatur, Alabama is a city and a community well known for its unquestioned willingness to become involved and work together in partnerships with end results that set a high standard for community development.

Recently, one such partnership became a successful example of what can be accomplished when you bring together the best of those talents and ideals. It is a project guided by the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority that culminates in the completed design phase of wh...at is to be known as the Decatur Gateway Pedestrian Bridge.

This proposed bridge is one of the critical components in the Strategic Plan for the on-going revitalization and redevelopment of downtown Decatur. This single direct tie would allow safe pedestrian access between the riverfront and the downtown via foot traffic that would be unimpeded by the heavy flow of traffic on a major highway.

The Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority is the lead manager for the development of the Decatur Gateway Pedestrian Bridge Engineering and Education Design Program and in doing so, is responsible for coordinating all parties involved in the process. This is a unique program in that it brings together the STEM program engineering classes at Austin High School in Decatur and the various design and engineering firms involved in the design of the bridge itself. The students are given the opportunity to work side by side with the professional firms in the classroom and in the field to create a community oriented, real time, practical project that will deliver a high profile impact on the future economic development of the city itself. The end result will have immersed the student in the realities of the engineering design process that will take them from the initial concept to bid ready plans and specifications.

January 26, 2015 - Train Depot Restoration

David Breland, Director of Historic Resources, City of Decatur, AL, quoted, “ALL ABOARD!  It is time to stand up for our Depot!  This 1905 architectural and historical gem is a symbol of our city and both its past and future.  We want a first-class museum here to be enjoyed not only by ourselves, but also by our children and grandchildren and by visitors to our city.  Please g...ive generously to insure that this treasure is restored to its former glory!”

Contributions can be made to the Depot through The Community Foundation of Greater Decatur for Depot restoration.  Contributions will be applied first to the required $200,000 of community-based support necessary to restore the transportation museum portion of the building itself.  Contributions in excess of this amount will assist in furnishing the transportation museum portion of the project and also to purchase historic artifacts for the museum.

Subject to City Council approval, naming rights with appropriate signage are available for the following portions of the museum:  Naming of the entire transportation museum $100,000, naming of the main large interior room of the museum $50,000, naming of the ticket office media room/mini-theater $25,000, naming of the exterior loading area between the Depot and the tracks (which will be converted to an excellent sitting/train-watching area) $50,000.

Main Street Alabama Begins Intensive Study of Decatur Market

Decatur—Main Street Alabama began an intensive study of Decatur market today by hosting an organizational kick off meeting with representatives from the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DDRA) and Jay Schlinsog of Downtown Professionals Network (DPN) from Franklin, Tennessee.  DPN is charged with completing a full market analysis that will include implementable strategies for growing businesses in downtown Decatur. “I am excited to begin work in Decatur,” said Jay Schlinsog, President of the Downtown Professionals Network, “the downtown community has strong leadership through the DDRA and the final report will include implementable strategies for strengthening the districts offerings that will be based on the primary market research we will be conducting.“ Main Street Alabama is sponsoring the study for Decatur as a part of the services that are offered through the organization to their Designated Communities. “The Decatur market analysis is an important piece to position downtown for growth,” stated Mary Helmer, President and State Coordinator of Main Street Alabama.  “It is necessary to determine market leakage and analyze what downtown Decatur can reasonably recapture to strengthen already existing businesses and recruit new businesses to the district.  Tools such as this market analysis are a key reason communities pursue Designation for our downtown revitalization program.   The insights that we will yield from this study will give DDRA clear direction when it comes to addressing market leakage, recruiting entrepreneurs to address weaknesses and building on our downtown’s strengths.”

Rick Paler, Director of the Downtown Decatur Redevelopment Authority stated, “Main Street Alabama is taking us to the next level in facilitating our in-depth downtown market analysis.  This analysis, will be one of the most critical tools that we will have at our disposal in order to expand the continued economic development of our downtown and moving it to a higher degree of success.”

Main Street Alabama focuses on bringing jobs, dollars and people back to Alabama’s historic communities.  Economic development is at the heart of our efforts to revitalize downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
